Stocking up on guns and canned food ... seriously?

So there's been a lot of dry humor recently about preparing for "when the zombies come," and using "guns and ammo as an investment hedge against inflation." I've generally laughed it off, because ... people are joking, right?

Then, in this morning's review of the news, I saw this quote from Barton M. Biggs, managing partner at Traxis Partners. "He advises well-to-do investors to arm themselves — with shotguns, if need be — against the possibility of a deepening downturn and accompanying 'social unrest.'"

Now maybe he's just joking too, but ... is anyone seriously stocking up on NRA-Certified Household Protection Equipment with anything other than hobbies or hunting in mind? Is there a real fear that this will degenerate into honest-to-god street-fighting and looting of occupied houses? Or is it just morbid humor?

If you've got good sources to suggest that this is likely, I'd enjoy a good read.

Thanks,
Dan
