2.5'-3.5' long body and 6'-8' wingspan. Yeah, I'd say that's big.
Another bird that's not nearly that big, but still pretty impressive to see close up...

Only about 1.5' long.
We have lots of hawks around here. I had a red shouldered hawk in a tree in my back yard one day. Another time, driving home from work past an open field, I saw a hawk take off from the top of a light pole, soar out over the field and go from a horizontal soar to a vertical drop. It was really cool to see him getting dinner.
