It's our frustration with Jack that, in part, makes LOST such a great show. Can you name another weekly show in which the writers would have the gall to make the male lead so unlikable? I mean, sure, Jack means well, but he's so sure of himself (and usually wrong) that most of us would deck him in real life.
I am going to reiterate my Jack/John/James= Holy Trinity theory here. They all have "J" first names (like Jesus), Jack's name is LITERALLY Shepherd (like Jesus), and they all have "Daddy Issues" (like Jesus).
SO, they the three of them are three very different parts of a necessary entity: the Island's leader. Notice how Jack was the leader of the survivors, Locke is the leader of the Others, and James is becoming a leader of the DHARMA Initiative.
Also notice that they represent three very different (and trimetrically-opposed) ways of dealing with problems: John believes, Jack acts, James thinks.
