Also notice that they represent three very different (and trimetrically-opposed) ways of dealing with problems: John believes, Jack acts, James thinks.
And yet, there have been times when James/Sawyer hasn't had time to think, and he has to act on his gut. Likewise with Locke. And there have been times when Jack has put a lot of thought into what his next move is.

I think one of the great strengths of the show is that it has shown every character to be multi-faceted and complex... and that is something everyone can identify with as an observer; no one is one-dimensional or otherwise easy to pigeonhole as a certain type of person. No one is "good" all the time and no one is "bad" all the time.

No one is smart all the time... no one is stupid all the time, etc.

Look at all the many facets (or stages of development?) of John Locke we have seen.
