I'm 38. If you asked me for "twist drill bits", I wouldn't have known that they were just normal bits. I'd have thought that they might be, but since you asked in an unusual way, I'd have thought that you were asking about something unusual.

Of course, I don't work in a hardware store either. But I don't expect people who work in stores to actually know anything about what they are selling. I generally assume that they don't and occasionally I'm pleasantly surprised.
