I used to hike alot of bear trails; Waterton Park, AB for example.
We'd always have the sacrificial fat guy along; ha, ha.
fwiw, I've never shot anything in my life. I had a rifle once but I was spending far too much time thinking about shooting people that I gave it up.
I respect the sport though, although pics like OPs do sadden me, such is life.
