Almost laughable, really.
Or maybe it's been explained and I missed it.

Okay, that's NOT believable, but you have no problem with a crippled man miraculously being able to walk again? Or dead people repeatedly coming back to to life? Or the fact that the past life of every major character in the show intertwines with all the other characters in some strange and meaningful way?
The whole point is that the Island WANTS certain people to survive. To all appearances, Jack FELL FROM THE SKY into a field of palms and survived.
As for the "other survivors" - Rose, Bernard, etc., I think it is assumed that they were killed in the "flaming arrow" attack... although I don't believe for a second that a character is dead on LOST without a convincing death scene. I KNOW that Mr. Earnst is dead, because I saw his ass blow up. I KNOW that Mr. Eko is dead, because I saw his ass get pummeled by the smoke monster. I KNOW that Charlie is dead, because I saw his ass drown unnecessarily. I KNOW that Alex is dead because I saw her take a bullet to the skull at point-blank range. We can only SUSPECT that other characters are dead - Rose/Bernard, Mikhail, Penny.
