I normally drive within 5-7 MPH of the max speed on the highway and at or under in all other circumstances. I've never had a speeding ticket and don't intend to earn one.
But I love to drive fast. I love the way it feels when every sense is hyper alert and you are 100% at the task of driving. I love the sound of the engine when it sings, I love the way telephone poles blip past like a picket fence when you go really, really fast.
I was found myself (in an undisclosed location, in a car I no longer have) on a road where I could see for miles. Literally miles as the road dropped down and crossed a valley. No cars, no cross roads and I really let the car run hard. When it couldn't give any more, all I wanted was more. More speed, More!!! I screamed in rage because there was no more. The car would only go about 160.
No business driving like that on a public road, no matter how deserted. I know that, and that's exactly what a whole bunch of people will chime in and say. But I still yearn for that speed. That rush.
But I always settle in the slow lane 5-7 mph over the speed limit and drone along. Law-abiding and bored as hell. The only entertainment is watching the nanny-mom-wagon with the lady yapping on the cell phone, holding a diet coke and putting on her makeup at the same time while flinging her two-ton yuppy-puppy taxi down the highway.
That always reminds me of who the lowly speed limits are set for. The common denominator who really does not have the attention span or skill set to operate a vehicle even at that speed...
