Looks like smooth jawed version of a pipe wrench which is also referred to as a monkey wrench. The modern version would be a adjustable/crescent wrench.
Side note. I'm surprised by how many ads I see in magazines where the mechanic/technician is smiling and proudly holding his adjustable wrench. Adjustable wrenches are usually good for rounding bolts/nuts and busting knuckles and should be the least used tool in his box. I use them more to bend metal more than loosen bolts. Of course, a box/open/socket wrench of the correct size should be used on fasteners.
