I used to do a hellava lot of dumpster diving in the south St. Louis area. We would hit up office supply store dumpsters - they would always pay out.
The other shocker was a local Blockbuster- they threw away about 200 brand new DVD cases every 2 weeks. I guess when then get new movies in individual cases they put them in their own special cases and throw the new DVD cases away. I had about 1000 DVD cases in my basement for three years. I think I gave a lot away eventually. It seemed like such a waste to throw them out. I put my burned CD's in them.
We would also go buy these car audio installer shops... a lot of times when they put in new head units or speakers they would throw the OEM stuff away. We got a lot of free car speakers and stereos like that. Also, burnt out car stereo amps would get thrown out- but those cases are aluminum and I used them from a lot of electronics hobby problems. My friend who sometimes take them and fix them- usually a blown chip or fuse. We worked at an electronics repair shop back then (2004)
Now that I live in a university-centered city I need to get back into it. The main thing is- you need a guy with a truck :-).
