That is the part the holds one end of the spring.
In mine I found it was very soft metal...allowing lots of wear.
I replaced it with much harder steel parts (made by me) and drilled and tapped to accept a bolt from behind.
Works like a charm....and I will never have to look at it again (did both doors).
