I have just read the millions of threads on this issue. There is some confusion about this broken part versus the center pivot unit that you can buy the weltmeister replacement for.
This is a late 87 911 so the center pivot (center of the spring) is steel already. The broken piece in my case is soft metal and retains the outer end of the spring. You can see the spring has unwound about 1/3 of a turn and stopped against one of the regulator mounts.
In my case the broken spring end retainer had jammed the regulator. I imagine the window will be slightly slower and put more load on the motor/electrical.
So it looks to me like the Weltmeister part probably wont fix this issue.
I found one other thread where the Pelican had made a retainer at home using a t-nut and a bracket. I will probably weld a new spring retainer on the regulator to retain the the full spring tension.
