FWIW I'm looking for something similar based on my experience witha 92 E34 wagon. My beater wagion has nearly 250K miles and still runs, rides, handles like a champ. In the 160K miles I've owned it I've replaced a water pump, a fuel pump and a (pricey) ride control rear strut. Total maintenance outlay in those 160K miles was about $1300 (including the 700$ shock coutesy of pelican which I don't think the E39 has).

From what I understand, (from a bud who has an e39) expect struts ($400 DIY) and brake rotors ($220 DIY)at c. 100K miles...other than that his e39 has been trouble free.

BTW, the feel of an e39 wagon is like it was machined out of a single piece of billet...nothing against the Vulva, but a much more solid feeling car. Bet the Missus will love it.
