When the cup holder is folded, the screws are hidden.
The cup holder is held into the door panel by four self tapping screws - I suppose one could take off the door panel and actually bolt it to the panel, but it seemed like overkill to me, particularly since mine is not a daily driver.
the adjustable feature actually works well to handle different size vessels - and the whole thing is a lot sturdier than the cup holders in my wife's 528i - the dealer has replaced 3 under warranty and the car is only 2 1/2 years old!
