I'd have to say they are either worth their weight in gold to someone or nothing to others. As I understand it, they contributed to a tendency to overheat and many 912E owners removed them when they could for the "Y" adaptors (mine has this). I believe in California where original specification are required until 2006 they are needed but individual enforcement relies on the technician recognizing the difference.
