Illinois case law is pretty clear. I only have the right to defend myself inside my own home and when my life is in danger--that is if I'm in a "friendly" jurisdiction. Residents of Chicago have no such right.
I also have to keep in mind that my cop neighbor is watching my back yard as well. If he sees a flashlight or laser dot he might chose to investigate himself, and he will not be unarmed.

That sucks about Illinois law. In SC, you're automatically allowed to presume they have the intent to harm you if it occurs at night and your back porch would qualify as part of your home.
