That is un-nerving. Years ago I decided that the cost per KHW was low compared to the damage, hassels, and attorneys fees associated with a break in or attempted break in. I tried the motion sensors, but they didn't seem to give me the reliability that I wanted, and the foxes (squirrel control) kept setting them off. Now I just turn on the front and back lights at dark and off again in the morning. It can be a hassel but for about $3-4 per month it's worth it.
Good for your neighbor, take him some steaks. Good neighbors are invaluable. In our hood we all try to take care of one another. Sounds like the same for you.
Hate to say it but you may want to check out an alarm company as well. I am, unfortunately it's almost gotten to that point.
