My 87 951 makes a strange metal on metal grinding sound when I accelerate through left hand turns and occasionally when I’m pushing it hard down the straight away.
When powering through a left turn there is a distinct noise of metal on metal coming from the rear end on the passenger side at the rear end of the car. The noise only occurs when I am turning left and happens whether I am accelerating or coasting (clutch in).
I’ve inspected the rear end and found that all the tranny mounts are tight and good, the CV joints were tight (one yr old).
When the car is idling you can feel a grinding in the aft most housing in the transaxle by the 4 pt bearing right above the oil cooler interface. Could the noise be a bad 4 pt bearing?
Noise is consistent with the mainshaft speed and can be faintly heard when starting out slow from a stop. Shifting is smooth in all gears with no issues.
Has anyone experienced this? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
