Looks like the perforation happened from a spot weld getting ripped out. Looks like the muffler was subjected to an enormous amount of force.
I like to give people the benefit of a doubt and assume that they are generally honest, but that's often not true. This looks more like the result of an accident while on the car to me. The force of a 2500-3000# car or two knocking this part around is easily enough to do that sort of damage. I'd be surprised if dropping the part unpackaged out of the back of a truck going 70 and then getting run over by a semi would leave that sort of damage. Or at least, it would probably be very different.
I'm curious to see where this goes.
