Pop stars need to be actors first. So from that perspective, Lambert is a great "idol." But he ain't a rock singer, I doubt he will break any ground (like Elvis did) or truly push the genre or spill his guts (like Plant or Mercury). He will be a good "star" though.
We'll find out in time, i'm betting on him reviving the entire dying genre that is rock.

Mercury is gone, Plant is long since washed up, Rose is a head case, Tyler is aged and inneffective....

I do agree there is an element of over the topedness, but you know, he is gay...and i like a good stage show anyway, like Axl Rose used to bring, so i have no complaints about that.
