Were you driving a Porsche? If so, you added another bit of ammo to the wonderful image we have as bags of douche.
I park on a crowded street w/ angle parking on both sides everyday. I would have stopped and let him turn in front of me, I like getting out of my car with at least one person liking me versus wanting to fight. Technically speaking, you are actually correct that he could not "hold" the space the way that he could if he were on the right side of the road. (Meaning waiting for a car to leave by sitting behind it w/ signal on, giving parked/leaving car enough room to pull-out). The bottom line is that there is always another parking spot 2 minutes later, I don't need to degrade myself by being rude.
This actually opens a whole 'nother can of worms regarding parking etiquette. I feel like many people need a class in it. My biggest peeve is when someone blocks the (only) traffic lane for 5 minutes while waiting for someone to load their car and leave an angle spot. This usually results in a line of cars a block long laying on their horns and makes EVERYONE within earshot pissed-off. Pull over to the right, for chrisakes!! WTF is wrong with people?? Rick is right. Common sense, common courtesy and manners are in short supply. I do my best to tilt the scale the other way by showing low-class people how it's done in public. And by class, I'm not referring to rich/poor. I've seen more affluent people who need to be slapped than poor people.
Lastly, I think that it's easy to imagine that there was a time not long ago when everyone had manners, nice fantasy but not true. There were always idiots walking around.
