The big ball bearing at the end of the input shaft and the pinion shaft bearings will rattle a lot when unloaded. You hear the bearings rattling at idle (with the clutch out), sounds almost like marbles rolling around inside the gearbox. You may also hear the pinion bearings when coasting down, while in gear. The noise is normal even on a fresh gearbox. But it will get worse with age/wear, heat, and thin trans fluid.
