Thanks guys! The cradle will hold a rather rare 3litre bottle of the 2000 Duval Millennium. Yes, beer, Belgian beer. For the past 9 years the bottle has been kept in its box, on its side in a cool, dark place, waiting with me for my wedding day.
I could see some dark yeast sediment when it was last inspected. I would hate for this yeast, although nutritious, to be jostled and poured with the beer, hence the decanter providing a slow and gentle tilt.
Inquires at local wineries and wine bars (I spoke with several sommeliers, apparently they hold the bottle sideways until emptied) turned up negative.
If I opt to construct the cradle, I suppose I will make a nice post wedding lawn ornament, or perhaps I could rent it out?
This 750ml cradle, although beautiful, would offend my Grandmother.
