Dogs are great, ain't they? Gum, chocolate, grapes, raisins, and assorted other innocent looking stuff are dog killers. So are nylon stockings/socks as my wifes best friend lost her dog to a nylon sock that had strangled its intestines.
A year ago, the wife was painting our hallway closets and had all the doors open or off. She came to me swearing that our one year old pup had ingested a metal Ace Bandage clip. These are about 1 inch long with 5 sharp claw-like grabbers on each end.
I asked if she saw him eat it and she couldn't be certain... "but I'm pretty sure there were two clips sitting on that shelf and now there's just one." If his previous record was brought to court, he would be found guilty on all counts.
I took the remaining clip and wrapped it in a sock and made the pup lie on top of it out in the backyard grass. I then grabbed my metal detector, ran it over him and the alarm sounded as it found the clip under him. I then removed the sock and clip and retested just him. Silence... and relief.
Saved an expensive trip to the vet or guessing and waiting to see if he would pass it. I knew that detector had some value even though I've never found more than quarter with it.
