The laws in Illinois are funny. I'd have to get a hunting permit to eat them and I wouldn't be able to hunt on my property (must have a minimum of 40 acres to hunt on in Illinois). The DNR would have a field day fining me for poaching and illegal hunting.
HOWEVER, I can legally dispose of "pests". The DNR officer at my hunting safety class explained that any animal that is not protected can be a "pest", but that I can't eat a "pest" if I don't want to be prosecuted for poaching.
So I can shoot the rabbits, but I can't eat them.
I think it will also have to be with a pellet gun so as not to run into the whole "discharging a firearm within city limits" thing.
