Looking at the pic, you may have buried the root graft...like a "hump" where the main trunk was grafted to the root stock.

Gotta keep that above the soil level...If not, the top will die, and the root stock tree will take over. Most tasty fruit trees are grafted to a non tasty root stock...

Check that planting depth!

That said, most of the "fruit basket" (different varieties on the same tree) do pollinize themselves, assuming the grower knew what he was doing.

Check that planting depth! I don't see the graft line...even a bark dust surround like yours will do the bad thing...
