Wow. I've never heard of that truth-stranger-than-fiction disaster. Possibly as it predates most people still living in the city.

Google the San Francisquito Canyon, or St. Francis Dam failure here in Los Angeles. Failed on it's first filling. I occasionally drive up San Francisquito Canyon, and still see huge chunks of the dam. Lots of people killed, not well known, cause the resignation of William Mulholland as the head of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (think the movie Chinatown). It washed something like 54 miles to the Pacific.
