I'll take a whack at it.
The Ducati gets about ~40 MPG, not quite as good as the Prius, but has a much smaller environmental impact, due to the lower production cost, and lack of expensive Nickel-metal hydride batteries and having them shipped halfway around the world a few times. Italy is closer to the United states than Japan, plus the lower weight of the motorcycle means it used less fuel to ship the bike to Shaun. He will ride the Ducati most of the time, limiting the use of the less economical 4-Runner to times when the added utility is necessary.
The 4-Runner can best be described as a rusted-out-basket-case, and a less environmentally conscious individual would simply scrap it. Shaun, being the strict environmentalist he is, sourced the parts to repair the truck and return it to the road, thereby deferring the manufacturing costs (and associated environmental impact)of a new truck to replace it for several years, and saving it from a trip to the scrapyard.
I am glad to see Shaun is putting the planet first.
Plus, chicks dig motorcycles. Granted, some chicks also dig the Prius, but they are probably the type that don't shave their pits.
