I have always wondered if one could use a pair of 'rain-gutter' type Yakima towers to grab either side of the rear lid near the front. They have rubber parts that touch the paint.
This arangement would use just one cross-bar for the fork mounts, front wheels in the trunk. Rear bike wheel(s) would need to be fixed, perhaps a strap?
