Antique shops are almost always overpriced unless you know something about the product that the person selling it doesn't (and it does happen more than you think).
One of the best things to go to are the antique marts that are held out in some guy's field in the middle of nowhere. You can score some seriously great stuff for very little. Of course, even better than that is to get yourself connected to the people who deal in the items you're interested in through the various guilds or organizations that they have.
