It's a mix. We get 2-3 "report this post to a moderator" alerts a day. Sometimes more, sometimes less. But we do rely on the "Pelican Brain Trust" to self-moderate these forums.
If there is a hot topic or a thread which can lead to folks being tempted to cross the line (ie: the chest thread), then we pay a little closer attention to what's being posted there.

That list is nearly 700 aliases long. A bulk of that are spammers that we regularly ban. (Lots of the spam posts are filtered so you don't see them - only the mods can see where to get special deals on Nike Shoes and how to prevent your warranty from expiring on your car - even after your second notice....)
