i agree, i would have had the gun (fully chambered) and yelled (peacefully) "can i help you?" on the 3rd or 4th ring. i would have noted the license plates and everything.

almost the exact thing happened to my mom. she said the guy was knocking and trying the doorknob. she was locked, loaded and my dad's extra service revolver, (pathetic by today's standard- .38 special snubby) trained at the door. she said, the guy yelled, "open the door lady!" and she replied, "open it yourself, so i can shoot you". she had a thick, very thick chinese accent back then...the guy left. this was in the 1960's.
