Unless you are absolutely pounding the bearings at full throttle, I don't think that's true--it's one of those "lugging is bad" myths that we inherited from our grandfathers...well, our fathers, in my ancient case. I remember a Pat Bedard column in C/D years ago debunking the "lugging is bad" myth, and my friend Pat was an engineer of considerable skill, not just a car writer.
Running around at 4,000 rpm is silly, noisy, fuel-consumptive and show-off'y. "This is a racecar, people, gotta keep the revs up." Nah.
