Think for a second about all of the crash testing Porsche did.

I had a '70 911 involved in a disagreement with a lamp-post (I was not driving) at roughly 35 mph, front dead center. The car had a full cage and no spare. The front end was almost cut in two, and the gas tank completely collapsed like a beer-can and turned into a nice V shape. The crash deformed the floor, buckling it- the drivers feet would likely have been crushed if the front cage cross-member between the suspension towers had not been there. Without the cage I'm sure the outcome would have been much worse.
There is zero question in my mind that with the spare the car would have faired much better, distributing the impact. I don't know what "proof" you want, but someplace I do have pictures.
