Seeing the crash you'd have no doubt that would be the car would have been better with the spare- the post cut clear through where the spare would have been. The simple fact is there is much more structure there with the spare than without- a wheel is one of the densest and strongest parts of the car, and it is obvious something like that will distribute load.
I still run my cars without a spare, and would do so at any track event without a second thought. But in my experience you're kidding yourself if you think that it doesn't increase crash protection in some circumstances.
