Joe, rule of thumb is that tax related records should be kept for as long as you own the investment plus 7 years. A house sale certainly falls into that category.
Good luck, though, with this issue. It sounds scammy, but I'm like you, would want to know what is going on with the smallest footprint back to the instigator.
