+3 At home I have a VERY nice butcherblock work bench that has a stain from charging batteries on it ( When I raced Rotax Karts which ran on total loss batteries to fire the spark plugs)

I had a S/S top on a work bench once. I would lose tools on it! It was cool until you where in a rush and you couldn't find a wrench that was right in fron of you.

We then painted it white.... It hid white items Next came odd tan. It worked great.

At my warehouse I have a masonite covered bench. It's perfect!

Oh and where your VISE is buy a aluminium cookie sheet and bolt your vise and or grinder down on top of the cookie sheet and into the work bench! IT will help contain cuttings, cuting fluid, grindings etc. I let the sheet hang over the work bench edge about 3/4 of an inch ( 20 mm for you euro snobs) it helps alot.
