I was out wrenching on my car today doing this exact same job. I always thought my clutch was naturally heavy and that was the way it was. Seems that my clutch release lever had the top broken off where the HSS fits. Which I am told will make a big difference... so i think I had been suffering needlessly.

Anyway.. I removed the Clutch Position lever, however try as I might I couldn't get the Clutch Release Lever off the spindle as in the pictures above.

As the Bentley manual suggests I moved the lever back and forth to loosen it and smothered the lever in Plus Gas (which is a release agent).

I couldn't get the lever to budge.. it was not coming off and I couldn't persuade it at all. I thought I had better stop before I break something. I did notice that there was no seal underneath the Clutch Release Lever and perhaps there may not be one on top of it either.

Any suggestions on how to remove the lever?? Should I use a puller of some kind? More brute force.. I worried about damaging spindle. Is there something I have overlooked?

Any advice appreciated.
