I've tossed my spring compressors so that I am never ever tempted to use them again.

The biggest problem (outside of my vastly poor judgement) was that I could compress the springs enouch to get the strut assembly apart but not to get it back together. (I did not uncompress the spring in between). I didn't any trouble with the springs or clamps moving during compression or anything like that. I was surprised.

In the end though, as I was putting it back together in the car - I did something stupid and it all came apart. The spring didn't fully decomress but it sure tried to. Luckly (did I mention I was lucky?) it was being held together by the car at this point so it couldn't completely decompress but the scary part was that it started to go sideways (as a spring'll do on you when a spring wants you to know who is boss).

That's when I was ready to tag out.

Again I am reminded that I am not a car guy - I am just a guy who used to work on my cars out of necessity - not desire.
He he, been there, done that.

You canna use the spring compressors on Macpherson struts!

When the go "SPROING!", you had best be else where!
