So I made a tube of perforated steel, welded it in, and then packed it with layers of fiberglass and steel wool. I also had to relocated the outlet lower so it would clear the bumper, but that's a different story.

I think that next time I do this, I'll just knock out the mesh pieces in the ends, and push the new mesh tube through those holes.
