My 3GS works great. AT&T service has always worked well for me. Verizon sucks at the house. It's like their cell tower is blocked and my house is a blind spot.
Don't know if you have a blocked tower. But you might try the phone elsewhere to see I you can get better service. I hear there is a way to reset you service/reception on the phone to improve reception. I haven't tried it but it's in the menu. Google it.
