I'm going to make a correction to my dune explanation, just so it doesn't go on err..
the guild navigators don't fold space with their mind, the ships do that; they use the spice drug to gain prescient vision on the jump through the space fold, ensuring correct target coordinates... as the space folding involves complex mathematics to compute the proper path through space to reach the other end safely. And in Frank Herbert's Dune series, there had been a ban on 'thinking machines' (complex computers) after an AI war thousands of years prior. So the only way to jump through the space folds safely was to use the mind power of the Navigators.
sorry... I'm rambling. it's an interesting book/movie.
