If your a Civil War buff, Ft. Pulaski is a hit. It was the first fort to be hit by rifle cannon fire and that battle made the older brick fortresses obsolete from then on. The fort is well preserved and takes several tours to tour. Its on a beautiful marsh location heading out to Tybee Island. You cannot miss it.
After the fort, turn east (left) toward Tybee Island and look for the signs on the right for the CRABSHACK. Its on the marsh as well and started as an old fish camp that spread out to a large seafood joint. It probably has the best of the low country seafood (shrimp, crabs, crawfish, etc) and its as casual as it gets......great place............
Everyone who comes to Savannah for a visit, heads down Bay Street and down to River Street. Its all commercial, but the shops are in the old cotton warehouse buildings and the place has a great historic touch to it. From oysters to t-shirts, you can find it all.
If you head away from Bay Street, take a driving tour of the histroic district. General Ogelthorpe planned the town on "squares" and the parks, historic homes and neighborhoods are beautiful. If you really want to check it out, bus tours are available.
Two days are'nt enough to see it all, but if I had to prioritize it, it be the Fort, the historic district, River and Bay Streets and a look-see at Tybee Island.
Definitely watch the tea.................get it unsweetened and do your our sweetening! You'll go into sugar rush shock othewise! Your in the land of grits, hush-puppies, collard greens, okra, black-eyed peas, pork and seafood. Get in the local cuisine and have fun...............
Caution.........................sand gnats will drive you insane this time of year!!!!
