Not certain there is much more than a this to support that but I'm willing to stand corrected...
All in all, You don't win 1/2 the champ car races you start by sucking completely as a driver. Nor do the laps he did at Le Mans in the 908...
Agreed he is a good race driver.. but it is not longer enough in contemporary F1...
but neither was Damon Hill and in a good car he became WC...
In a good car he developed .....please give him the credit he is due...both Frank Williams and Patrick Head give him the credit for getting the team to the point where Aryton considered returning.. because he saw a team that could develop the car, that included a certain D.Hill as the Williams test and development driver...Damon stepped up after Aryton's death to become team leader...he also won a WDC and his car won the WDC with Jacques.. the subsequent years showed how little development JV was actually doingg.
Hamilton can't win driving a dog, Button was all but dead and now he's a star...
The dog is Hamilton' own...he cannot develop a car, one hopes its a skill he is learning, and is reaping the rewards of a season spent fighting his own team mate and Ferrari....oh well..

The issue is that with the right team he could have/ should have been better....but overall he did not do better and sadly he isn't the current 'right stuff' for F1.
As for Button...well he does know how to driver pretty well and with that 'right team' which he has his skills are flourishing..he was always rated as a very talented driver, both in race and development terms.. but too much of a nice guy (or too distracted) which has lost him years of success. He still needs to win a WDC to be viewed as a decent driver.
