crankshaft compatibility
I have a 74 914/1.8. I can get a complete 1.8 motor for about $100, and I need some of the other parts on it anyhow. I have a nice set of 2.0 rods, so my question is this: can the 1.7/1.8 crank be offset ground to produce a 2.0 crank? Know anybody that's familiar with this and does a good job at a reasonable price? The VW engine rebuilder's book says you can, but some people have posted that you need a 2.0 crank to start with. My thinking is to have the crank ground, use 96mm piston/cyl asms, and build it that way with the 1.8 heads. Also, do any of the Bus 2.0 cranks work? I heard there that the bolt patterns for the flywheels differ. Regards, Will
