If you jumper so the pump runs all the time the jumper is in, not just when the ign switch is on, then you are going directly to battery power and it won't effect the switch.
That seems the logical way to do it, so yup, I am barking up the wrong tree.
BTW did you jumper the fuel pump or fuel injection relay?
