When in CA I didn't have s problem with the DMV except for the wait. Once I got to the window, things were handled fine. Going to AAA was more efficient though. In Oregon my DMV experiences have been weirdly good. The guy behind the counter even remembered us on one of the later visits. I don't bother to use the AAA option here.
