Texting uses very little bandwidth and will 'connect' you with someone when reception is otherwise lousy. Good for short messages when you really can't or don't want to talk. Best use - grocery lists from the wife on the way home from work.

My teen daughters are texting fiends and we are working on their manners and priorities in this regard. Putting the phone away when around other people. But they are perfectly happy to hang with freinds and they are virally texting 20 other people and themselves, doing Facebook etc. My 17 yo has had 1200 texts in the four days she has been back from camp (without her phone thank God) We have the data from MyVerizon - including texting while sitting kids while swimming - she is busted. We pay $5/line to restrict texting to reasonable hours - it has helped their sleep.
