James Perse for polos and shirts, no contest. He's the hottest designer around and for good reason. Downside is that with great popularity comes ubiquity in NYC and L.A., where you live probably no one has ever heard of him.

Not cheap but just awesome, simple designs that make you wonder why everyone can't make clothes so well and anyone who knows fashion, or even style will recognise his stuff immediately. That other stuff that's been suggested here is nothing but department store crap. (Which I wear at times, don't get me wrong).
