As with most of SoFLA, there are a lot of bad "pockets" scattered throughout nice areas (strangest thing...in other places, you have to get in your car to drive to the bad neighborhoods. In FLA, they are inter-twined). You don't want to be on the fringe.
Best advice is to buy the most expensive home you can afford within the area you want to be. Don't buy anything sight un-seen.
Stay East of Federal Hwy. (US-1) if at all possible. Be reminded, your property tax and windstorm/flood/hurricane insurance can equal, or even exceed, your mortgage payment.
